A bible retelling3/11/2023 ![]() LeprosyĪs the footnotes of most modern translations of the Bible frequently remind us, the word leprosy did not mean the same thing in biblical times as it does today. I’ve long had problems with how this story has been used as a moralistic lesson on saying “Thank you.” I retold the story as a way of looking beyond that and seeing the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion at play. Direct biblical quotations in the episode are taken from the New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition. (Click to read) This story is unique to the Gospel of Luke, but it does parallel other stories of cleansing lepers that are told in the gospels. The story of the ten lepers is found in Luke 17:11-19.
